Alternative hairstyles are ones that stand apart from fashionable, conventional and classic hairstyles. They are best described as unusual, daring, bright, fun, avante-garde, geometric and exaggerated- with elements of punk.

If you want to feel free of fashion, then go for it. Or, if you want to bolster your marketing campaign, then an alternative hairstyle may be a good choice. But beware because most short styles will take some time to grow out, and wild colors may damage your hair (particulary when stripped out or re-colored).

Big and Bold was the main idea for this look. Jagged cut layers gave this hairstyle plenty of texture and attitude, while the vibrant color makes it more for the brave.

Men's Taper Fade Haircuts

Shemar Moore's taper tade haircut
Shemar Moore taper tade haircut

If you are a guy, chances are you have or have had a taper fade haircut at least once in your life. These popular men’s haircuts are performed with the use of electric hair clippers, and they are among the most requested types of men’s haircuts in salons and barber shops the world over. A taper fade haircut is essentially a haircut in which the length of the hair either decreases or increases gradually, generally featuring longer hair on top that gradually tapers and fades to much shorter hair along the neck line and above the ears.

While taper fade haircuts can be achieved at home by using virtually any electric hair clippers (most of which come with attachment guides to easily control the length in which you cut your hair), the fact of the matter is that taper fade haircuts have become something of an art form in many communities, and a trained hairstylist or barber can often provide cleaner lines and a far more polished, professional and put together overall look than most people can achieve on their own.

Taper fade haircuts are among the most popular haircuts for men for a number of reasons, not the least of which being that they are so extremely versatile. They can be modified in dozens (if not hundreds) of ways, allowing for easy customization and personalization of a classic style. This means that any man can easily put his own twist or flavor into this classic style. Some of the most popular modifications of the taper fade haircuts include such things as asymmetrical lines in the back, splashes of color, and longer than is traditional hair on top. In fact, the taper fade haircut is often the starting point of such edgy, trendy haircuts as the faux hawk.

In reality, the taper fade haircut is a quintessential men’s trademark. It is almost universally favored among men and women of all ages, and in its most traditional forms, it is a fallback that any man can turn to in order to ensure that his haircut is both fashionable and appropriate. Any barber or hair stylist worth their salt will be able to hook you up with a perfectly executed taper fade haircut; or you can try your hand at doing the job yourself. There are dozens of DVD tutorials on the market that can start you off in the right direction. Here is one of them:

There are literally hundreds of products out there that promise men thicker, fuller hair. Of course, as many men struggling with thinning hair can tell you, most of these products don’t do what they promise. At least not for everybody – and therein lies the problem. The fact of the matter is that there is no single product or method that has been proven to be 100% effective for men who are wondering how to get thicker hair. However, that does not mean that those who are suffering from hair loss should throw in the towel. It is still possible to find a product that can help you get thicker hair; the process may just require a little trial and error.

If you are among those who have wondered how to get thicker hair, you may want to try some of the popular fallback products first. That is because most of these products provide fairly good, marked results, for many of their users. Among these products are Rogain, Propecia, and Nioxin, and depending on the severity of your thinning hair, any one of them may offer the results you desire. If you prefer, you may wish to look into one of the many herbal products that promise to give you thicker hair. Depending on the product, they may either claim to promote the growth of new hair, or they may promise to make the hair shafts that you already have become physically thicker.

There are other answers to the question of how to get thicker hair, however. For example, one way to ensure that your hair remains its thickest for as long as possible is to simple take good care of it. This could be as simple as using high quality shampoos and conditioners, and combing rather than brushing. Additionally, incorporating deep conditioning or anti-breakage treatments into your hair care regimen may cause your hair to appear thicker and fuller. This is because split ends and breakage can really contribute to overall hair loss.

David Tennant hairstyle
David Tennant hairstyle

David Tennant was born David John MacDonald in Bathgate, West Lothian, Scotland on 18 April, 1971. It has been his lifelong dream to be an actor since the age of 5 when he fell in love with the television program Dr. Who. Unlike many children who reach a decision like that at such a tender age, Tennant pursued his goal almost single mindedly.

Tennant chose to take a different stage name after learning that there was already a David MacDonald listed as an actor in the UK. Two of the roles that Tennant is most famous for are the role of Barty Crouch Jr in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and the character that inspired him to become an actor in the first place, the tenth incarnation of the Dr. in Dr. Who.

David Tennant mussed hairstyle

Tennants unusual hair style looks really good on him. Do not let appearances fool you. Even though his hair looks as if it were slightly mussed at any given time, that style is not as easy to achieve as you might think. He has to part his hair and comb it back and over to get it to stand up and come alive, then use styling gel to actually provide the hold as his hair is actually long enough to lay flat if left to its own devices.

Putting highlights in your hair is not just a woman thing anymore. More and more men are doing it or having it done at salons. Both sexes highlight for the same reasons, to look younger, to change their look altogether or simply to stay current and fashionable.

So men, if you're not the do it yourself kind of guy, then here is what you do: find pictures of men with the kind of coloring in their hair that you would like in yours and print them out. Then look for some pictures of some styles that you think would look good on you, too. If you see picture of a celebrity whose looks you admire, be sure to remember the name so you can tell the stylist. Take all these pictures and information with you to the stylist so that the two of you can come up with a plan for the best way to highlight and wear your hair.

Always be sure and tell the salon, that you are having your hair highlighted, when making the appointment. And it is best to ask for a little extra time, if you're not sure what you want. In other words, you need to ask for consultation time with the stylist. You don't want to rush the stylist, because the results are better when there is no hurry.

Don't load up on hair products or styling gels before going to the salon. The stylist needs your hair clean and substance free when working. It may be necessary to wash and dry your hair before the stylist can do her work and that will up the price of the visit. So save time and money, and wash your hair before you go.

Talk over your options before hand. If this is your first time, you may want to go with a few subtle highlights in the front of your hair. Later on, at the next appointment, you may want to add in highlighting throughout your hair to work with your natural coloring. Ask you stylist what colors he/she is using. This is in case you decide you want to try it at home with you doing it yourself or your significant other standing in as stylist.

Pay strict attention to the true color of your hair once the stylist is finished. The actual color of the highlights won't show until your hair is dry. If they are too light, then a toner can be added. If they are too dark, then the stylist may have to start all over from the beginning. That's why it is important to talk first and work out a plan first, before proceeding with the coloring.

Once you're done, it will be necessary to take good care of your hair by using a good shampoo and conditioner in order to keep your hair healthy. It is also wise to avoid long exposure to the sun to keep it from bleaching out your color.

History Of The Mullet

History Of The Mullet

David Bowie Mullet hairstyle

The history of the mullet, contrary to popular belief, dates back to the 1960’s when Tom Jones first sported the haircut. The cut is short in the front and long in the back. David Bowie wore it in the 1970’ and so did Paul McCartney. But it wasn’t until the 1980’s that the haircut really took hold.

In the 1980’s along with an Achey Breaky Heart, came the re-emergence of the mullet in full force. Billy Ray Cyrus brought the mullet main stream and bands such as Guns N’ Roses and the Motley Crue wore their own style of mullet. The mullets were bigger than ever before with the top being spikes or bouffant style. Highlights were included to add to the effect as well as curls in the back. Germany is one of the countries that embarced the mullet giving it the name Vokuhila.

The mullet had a life of its own. Men were wearing two different looks at one time. From the front it was all business, from the back it was a party. Along with Z Cavarricci pants, big gold necklaces and loafers with no socks, the look was complete. Everywhere you went, there was the mullet.

The mullet lasted well into the 1990’s where we saw John Stamos sport it on the popular televison show Full House. Who didn’t want to look like Uncle Jesse with his shiny black mullet. The 90’s had a tamer version of the 80’s style, where the front was no longer spiked or high, it was shorter and closer to the head. The back was still long though. This haircut finally gave way to a haircut that seemed to be the polar opposite. Not really given a name, the top got longer and the back shorter. The tousled top was much sexier, with a neat back.

The history of the mullet shows us that this haircut was probably the most loved in its time, the most remembered by name and the most stereotyped haircut of all time. Now the reference to anyone wearing a mullet today is not really anything you want to hear. It doesn’t look like the mullet will ever return, but will live in history in the minds of those who wore them and in the pictures to show the next generations after that. If you dare!

Anders Friden is the lead vocalist for the alternative metal band, In Flames. Born March 25, 1973 in Gothenburg Sweden, Friden is married and has one child, Agnes. Early in his career, he was the lead vocalist with a band called, Dark Tranquility, but left them to take the job of lead with In Flames in 1995.

Prior to the recording of the 2002 album, Reroute to Remain, Friden maintained a clean shaven appearance, though his hair was longer than most. After the release of Reroute to Remain, Friden changed his appearance drastically by allowing his beard to grow out and changing his hairstyle.

Today, Friden wears his hair in dreadlocks. Even with the complexity of the braiding to produce this hairstyle, it still reaches almost halfway down his back. Dreadlocks, or Dreads as they are known in some areas, are among the most difficult hairstyles to maintain because of the complexity of taking the hair out of braids to clean it and then braiding each lock back into its place.

Friden dreads

It would appear that Friden's music and lyrics are evolving as time passes and he addresses more personal topics with his songs. He and his dreads are probably going to be on the metal music scene for quite some time to come.

Receding hairlines are just something that many men are going to have to deal with. There are things that can be done to create hair where none existed before, such as herbs and creams, shampoos, a toupee or even surgery. For many men, though, none of these are really an option, or they just don’t want to fight getting older that badly. They turn to hairstyles for men with receding hairlines.

Medium length hairstyle from Ryan Hansen
Ryan Hansen's medium length hairstyle

There are many that do a great job of hiding a receding hairline, that are modern and fresh looking without making men appear old or out-of-date. One of the currently most popular styles is to grow the hair out to a medium length all over the head. This gives plenty of hair to cover the receding areas without looking unkempt, just casual. Shaggy hairstyle & surfer hairstyle are good choices.

Clooney hairstyle
George Clooney Caesar Cut

Some men have for that one of their favorite hairstyles for men with receding hairlines is to grow only the sides and front just a little longer particularly in the bang area. This lets the hair fall more naturally and cover up the receding areas very well and still has a more professional look.

You can also go the exact opposite when looking for hairstyles for men with receding hairlines. Keep the top and the sides shorter than the rest of the hair. This can be faded in so the receding area is simply not as noticeable. This looks really good for the busy professional who just doesn’t have time to fiddle with hairstyling products.

When looking at hairstyles for men with receding hairlines, don’t forget the styles that style the hair back from the forehead. If you don’t have a large forehead to begin with, this can really balance out your face some. This is really good for those who have wonderfully thick hair everywhere but the very front of the head. This is not a hairstyle that is going to hide the receding hairline, but it is a simple, tasteful style that shows that you acknowledge that you are starting to get a little older, and you’re okay with that. It’s definitely better than a comb over that ages a person instantly.

Cool buzz cut from Channing Tatum

Very short military buzz cut

Getting a buzz cut can also help to blend what hair there still is with what is missing so that it is not so noticeable. You do have to keep this very maintained to continue to look good. It’s a great style, particularly for those who are starting to thin all over, not just at the temples and forehead.

Finding hairstyles for men with receding hairlines is not hard, any barber or stylist worth their salt can do them, and they look great. Just tell your stylist what you are hoping to accomplish and they can make you look the best you can. After all, it’s the style that counts, not the actual amount of hair you have that makes you look great.

How to Give A Buzz Cut

A buzz cut is a popular haircut and easy for men to live with. This article will show you how to give a buzz cut. Don’t worry, its one of the easiest haircuts you can give.

The first thing you need to do it, choose the length that you want for the final result. I will show you how to give a buzz cut using the numbers on the guard top on the buzzer. The best cut is when you use a 3 guard for the top, a 2 guard on the sides and a 1 guard around the edges. Start with clean, dry hair that is free from product. Buzz the top first with the #3 guard by laying the clipper flat against the forehead and working towards the back. Move slowly down the middle of the head to the crown of the head. Make a few swipes until the entire top of the head is buzzed. At the crown, hair may be growing in a few different directions, so you may have to move the buzzer in the same directions to get it even.

Next, buzz the sides with the #2 guard. Start at the sideburns and lay the clipper flat against the side of the head. Move up the head to just past the buzzed top that you just did. Make as many swipes from the bottom up to the top until you get the sides done. Blend where the sides and top meet by rocking the clipper back and forth a few times on that edge. Do the same for the other side. For the back, continue with the #2 guard and do the same procedure as the sides, being careful to blend at the top.

Buzz the edges with the #1 guard by trimming around the ears, starting at the sideburn. Use a rocking action to blend. Bend the ears to go around and to the bottom of the head and back up the other side. For a clean line across the back and anywhere else, turn the clipper so the teeth face the skin. With bottom of the blade facing up, create a straight line and then place the blade flat against the skin to shave underneath the line and clean it up.

I hope you enjoyed learning how to give a buzz cut. Don’t forget to brush the hair off the neck and face. You will love the feeling when you rub your hand on the fuzzy, soft head.

Eddie Cochran, born Ray Edward Cochrane, was one of the early pioneers of Rock and Roll. He was playing the guitar by the time he was 12 years old and doing so as a professional at 16. He teamed up with country singer Hank Cochran and dropped the e from his last name. Though not related, the two were billed as the Cochran brothers.

In 1957, they went their separate ways after seeing an Elvis Presley performance and Eddie realized that this was the type of music he wanted to play. Hank was focused on country and western.

Eddie Cochran was killed in a tragic car accident on his way to London airport at the age of 21. He had several successful records, more in the UK than in the US. His most popular song in the US was "Summertime Blues" which has been covered by such artists as Alan Jackson.

By today's standards, Eddie Cochran's music would be classed as more Rockabilly than hard core rock. Like many of the male stars of the genre, Eddie wore his hair in a style known as the pompadour. By definition, this haircut called for the sides to be cut short while leaving the top and back longer. The style was created by combing the top hair up and back. This was one of the most popular hair styles of the 1950s and has come back with the advent of new Rockabilly bands.

How to Layer Your Own Hair

Matt Lanter with his crop layered hairstyle.

In a hair-world dominated by women, it may be hard for men to feel comfortable showing a sincere concern about their own style. Concepts that have been associated with female haircuts for decades are now readily available to be used by males too! One of those concepts is essential when it comes to choosing a haircut: layering.

Layering hair is the same idea as layering clothing when hunting or putting multiple coats of paint onto drywall. It can create volume that may not have existed beforehand, lessen the weight of heavy hair, or flatter a face shape when it was thought impossible. Basically, layering hair is building steps into the hair, either going up or going down. The bottom can be longest, gradually going shorter as it steps up, or the top can be longest, gradually going shorter as it goes down, which is also known as a stack.

Learning how to layer hair yourself isn’t as difficult as it may seem. If you have a fine toothcomb, a good pair of scissors, shears, or razors anyone can be a pro! Having a mirror to see the back of your head may help but isn’t totally necessary.

When laying your hair, it’s always best to work on wet hair. This gives an easier cut and less chance for split ends or missed hairs. If the hair is straight it can be towel dried first. If the hair is curly it’s best to cut when thoroughly wet so that it can be as straight as possible when cutting. Use a brush or the fine toothcomb to remove all tangles from the hair.

Start by pull the hair straight through two fingers and cutting the bottom of the hair to the longest length that you wish it to be. If you prefer to have a clean neckline, don’t be afraid to take a razor to your neck and shave to the point you wish the hair to end; this gives a stopping point for shorter hair. Depending on the thickness, or distance apart that you wish the layers to be, grasp the next layer of hair between two fingers and make clean cuts. Be sure to leave some extra length since your hair is wet and will dry a bit shorter. Also, remember that you can always cut more off, but you can’t put it back.

Repeat this process until you reach the top layer. Check the hair to make sure that it blends well. When using a powered set of shears, change your blade length for every half-inch or so that you move up through the hair, this will give a pretty good blended look.

If your hair is longer, layers usually work well with a face frame. This isn’t just for women! Take the front 1” section of hair, grasp between two fingers, and angle your hand outward. Using a razor to take this hair off gives a gradual, natural look. If you have any type of bangs that need to be trimmed with your layering, grasp between your fingers and cut upward into the hair. It may not seem like this will accomplish much, but it gives a wispy, natural lay.

For touch ups on the layers, or a quick, messy layering look, take an inch thick section of hair and twist as tightly as desired, cut at an upward angle and untwist. Just remember, the tighter the twist, the stronger and shorter the layer will be.

Use a blow dryer on your hair when the layering is done if you have one. It will display stray or missed hairs in the average setting this way. Remember that hair does react to being cut. It tends to “freak out” for a few days until it has accustomed to the loss of length. Styling products will enhance your handsome new do. Try to trim or touch up about every six weeks. If you can learn how to layer hair for yourself, helping out buddies with their hair will be a new, enviable talent.

For many people, choosing to have dreadlocks is not just a hairstyle, but also a way of life. It is sub-culture that defines the very essence of a man. Like any item that identifies a person, be it a vehicle or home, preservation is of the utmost importance; and dreadlock maintenance is no exception.

One valuable piece of information to remember when taking care of your dreadlocks is that they do not require less work than other styles, as most people assume; so you shouldn’t go taking them lightly.

Once you have your dreadlocks established and have abstained from moisture for the recommended five weeks or so, it’s important to keep your dreads clean! With hair naturally meshed together, it is easier for insects, dirt and even smells (i.e. cooking or cigarette smoke) to become trapped within. Choosing the right shampoo for dreadlock maintenance will vary from person to person depending on length of dreads, ethnicity, and the environment where one lives and works. Most prefer using a neutralizing or mint-based shampoo every one to two weeks to balance an itchy scalp. This will also leave a fresh, crisp scent with their locks. Try to go for all-natural based products. These tend to stand out in the hair-care aisle at your local store, keeping you from being stuck looking at “hair stuff” for hours at a time.

If your natural hair tends to be courser or dryer than the next person, try to use a natural oil-based conditioner as well. Massage the scalp for a few minutes to open up cuticles in the shower and allow your own biological oils to create a one-of-kind leave in conditioner. You probably won’t be able to market it, but it will be all yours.

Don’t go crazy when you’re drying your dreadlocks either! Remember; try to treat them like your favorite vehicle, gently, yet in control, so that you can show them off to your friends later. Ring each lock out individually if you can, starting from top to bottom to remove as much moisture from the center of the dread as possible.

After your dreadlocks have been cleaned, conditioned, and dried a huge part of dreadlock maintenance is, of course, keeping the dreads together. Dreadlock enthusiasts have long disputed over the use of wax when sustaining locks. For someone with a very physical career, such as construction or product production, wax can present a better hold for these locks. Of course, that comes with the downfall of sweat from your head merging with the wax and creating a really unattractive goop substance. Most dread wearers prefer to gently twist their locks with natural oil, such as jojoba oil. This can provide a cleaner look and as much hold as any wax-based product.

The last reminder of dreadlock maintenance is that when sleeping, or in a harsh air environment (extreme heat, cold, dryness, or humidity) you should always try to cover your dreads with a silk, satin, or fine fabric scarf or material. These can be found at any fabric store, and in very masculine, solid colors. The worst thing that could happen to dreads is breakage under stress from the loss of moisture from Mother Nature’s best creation: you.

If you keep your dreadlocks maintained, you will be protecting an asset that may be just as, if not more important as the other elements of a man’s identity. They’re with you all the time; why not keep them on “lock” down?

Through the ages men have been searching for how to style men’s short hair and have come up with some great ways to go from corporate to cutting edge.

If you are looking for some ideas on how to style men’s short hair, one of the best cuts for versatility is layers. Layers offer the opportunity to add products and create many different looks. Since most men have coarser hair, the layers allow the hair to lie flatter against the head. That is, unless you want some wild spikes and texture. Products such as molding waxes, hair polishers and flat irons can create some of today’s hottest looks. For the “Alfie” hairstyle made famous by Jude Law, the hair is cut shorter to the head on the sides with more volume on top to push towards the middle and spike up or mess up to create a faux hawk look. Other great ideas for short hair is to texturize all layers for a messy look all around. Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray works well for a ‘just got back from the beach” look. Another great style is short all around with long layers on top that swoop across the forehead. Zac Efron & Chace Crawford is famous for sporting this short hair style. Popular with the younger generation of skateboarder and surfers this style has a wispy, tossled look but is still short enough to go conservative if need be.

The best haircut is one that offers versatility, easy upkeep and healthy shine. Most men when they get a haircut often have question on how to style. Men’s short hair does not have to be boring. Unlike short haircuts of the past, there is much that can be done with scissors, razors, or clippers that create a cut that allows for many styles. Pushed straight back gives the old movie star look, part it to the side for a boyish look, spike it for a more edgy look, buzz it for clean look, pull it forward for a beach swept appearance and let it curl for a natural look. Whatever your hair texture, there is a great hair cut and style for you. Remember to get some great products that work with your hair and a flat iron is an essential tool in your armory.

How To Grow Black Hair

When asked how to grow black hair, unfortunately, not everyone can agree upon the best answer. Many African-Americans go through heat treatments or use chemical treatments to relax and straighten hair. While this can produce the desired soft and loose locks, in the long run, these treatments are harsh and highly damaging to hair. You also end up in a vicious cycle since you’ll find the need to get more frequent treatments to maintain your look, but each treatment only further breaks down the sulfur bonds in your hair. Pretty soon you’re left with dried out, brittle hair- or worse, no hair!

Instead, take these tips into consideration on how to grow black hair:

  1. First of all, if you’re using chemical treatments to relax tightly curled black hair, STOP. Do you really want to keep rubbing stuff containing lye, ammonia or other harsh chemicals into you head? Stop immediately and give your hair time to recover- that’s at least 2-4 weeks. In the meantime, treat hair with a gentle touch. Trim off the dead, split ends or shave all your hair off and start anew. You asked how to grow black hair? Well, part of the answer is to stimulate the regrowth of new, natural hair.

  2. Conditioners are your friends! They are the key factor in how to grow black hair. You will need a rich conditioner to combat the natural dryness of black hair. Normal hair has about 10-15% moisture but black hair tends to have less than that. Thus, you should try to use hair products with natural oils (good ones to look for are olive or jojoba oil), fatty acids or shea butter, to combat the dryness. Avoid hair conditioners with petroleum or mineral oil; they’ll give you too much of a “shellacked” look and worse, it will be a disgusting cloggy mess to clean off

  3. Massage your scalp with the pads of your fingers. There’s no proven fact this leads to hair growth but it does stimulate circulation which will bring a rich supply of blood and oxygen to the head, which in turn is good for cells. Massage is also relaxing and we all know stress can affect hair loss!

  4. Treating hair as gently as possible is a point to address when talking about how to grow black hair. Mechanical damage caused by aggressive brushing and combing will only pull out or break brittle black hair. Use a wide tooth comb to avoid pulling too much hair. Avoid over-brushing your hair as you will strip off the protective and moisturizing oils.

  5. If you don’t have to, avoid washing your hair daily. You don’t necessarily have to skip out on daily ablutions, just don’t wash your hair if it doesn’t feel dirty. Those oils produced by the scalp will help keep your hair moisturized.

  6. You are what you eat, so consider the effect certain foods may have as you explore how to grow black hair. Drink lots of water and get enough proteins and healthy fats into your diet. Consider taking a multivitamin to supplement your diet.

Hair Wax - How to Apply It

Are you one of the fortunate few whose hair stays exactly as you want it to? Do you never have a hair out of place? If so, you have no need for hair wax. On the other hand, if you are like the vast majority of men around the world, you aren’t so lucky. Hair wax may be just the thing to tame that flyaway cowlick, or hold that wave in place. You can use it to move your hair forward, backward, to the side, or to spike it. If applied correctly, you can even create the appearance of a fuller head of hair.

The great thing about hair wax is that you have almost limitless styling uses. Although most waxes don’t leave you hair stiff like gel does, there are some that leave your hair stiffer than others. Hair wax also adds a different luster from most any other kind of hair product on the market.

Hair wax is a great way to style your hair without making it overly stiff the way most gels do. Why don’t you want your spiked hair too stiff? There is nothing worse than spending the evening getting your date into a romantic mood, then poking her in the eye with the points of the gel-enhanced mini samurai swords atop your head when you try to cuddle.

Although hair wax can add a lusty sheen, most guys don’t want the Severus Snape slicked-back look. If you glob excessive hair wax on, that is exactly what you will get. Hair wax usually looks best when you use barely enough to keep your hair positioned just the way you want it. Put a little wax on the tips of your fingers, or on an applicator stick, and run it through your hair to shape bangs, spikes, waves and curls. In the case of hair wax, less is usually more. Unless you are planning to head outdoors during a category 5 hurricane, you only need a dab here and there, or lightly and evenly spread throughout your hair.

When applying hair wax, run the wax through your hair uniformly so you don’t end up with clumps. Blobs of wax positioned haphazardly about the head are neither attractive nor enticing. If anything, either your date will be repulsed by what she sees, or laugh with her girlfriends about it the next day. One thing she will be sure not to do is to run her fingers through your hair—that is, of course, unless she has a wet wipe handy.

There are different types of hair wax. Some are dry for a matte-type look. You can find wax creams, volumizing gel-waxes, waxes for fine hair, waxes for thick hair, waxes for stiff hair, and more. There are even spray waxes available. If you are looking for the best way to keep your hair looking good, check out the various hair wax options that are available, and choose the one just right for you and your styling needs.

How to Cut Men's Curly Hair

Men’s curly hair is often considered to be the most difficult to cut. Men’s hair cuts must be cut to shape the natural curl formation. Curly hair must be cut so that the wave pattern conforms to the desired style. Men’s curly hair cuts should make the hair look cared for and controlled. If the look is a relaxed, casual style the curls will be cut to look shaped and uniform yet curly and casual. If the look is smooth and flat then the curls should be cut to lie smooth and flat. Here are some tips on cutting men’s curling hair styles.

The Curl

Do not let the curl control the style. The curl will need to be shaped so that it conforms to the desired style. Each curl has a bend and the curls must each be cut on the curve of the same bend. The bend is the place to cut the curl so that it falls in the desired direction. If you cut the curl before the bend the hair will stick out awkwardly and will have a straight off look. If the curl is cut correctly it will fall into a wave pattern with the other curls on the head.

Wave Patterns

There may be different curl patterns on the same head of hair. The crown area may be overly curly while the sides and the back have a very relaxed, almost straight curl pattern. The same head of hair may have different sections of weak and tight curls. If the hair is not cut correctly it may look like different dimensions of curls going in various directions without any conformity. The curl patterns will need to be cut to create the look of one wave pattern. Cut and shape the curls formations to blend with one another. You will need to shape the straighter curl formation in a way that it lays correctly and partners with the curly hair next to it.

Curl Formations

Here are some tips to blending a weaker curl formation or pattern with a tight curl formation or pattern.

As you section the hair observe the curl formation and create the cut in your mind. Start with the crown and shape the curls, cutting them on the bend. Take the curl formation on the crown and blend it into the sides of the head. Create a merging of the top curl formation and the side curl formation. Comb the hair to see if the cut curls are automatically blending. Mess the hair with your hand and watch to see if the curl formations blend together creating the look of one curl pattern. If they do not blend then take the time to reshape the areas that are not blending with each other. Next blend the sides and the crown into the back of the head.

Be sure to keep the curl pattern blending into the curls in the back. Be especially careful when your blend the crown area at the back of the top of the head with the curls in the back. Leave a little more length. Then comb and watch the pattern of the curls. If the curls fall evenly and smoothly then continue to the rest of the hair. If they do not fall smoothly then take a bit more hair off. Allow the curl formation to shape your finger as you cut. If you notice that you are not thrilled with how one section of the curl formations flow then shape a little more in that area.

Edges and Hairline

When doing the edges around the ear and the hair line determine how short you want to go. If you want curls to overlap the ears then also leave a little curl waving at the hairline also. If you want a short look then shape around the ear and along the edge of the hairline. Taper the curl formation around the ear and the hairline so that it lays smooth.

Electric Clippers

If you want a straight look around the edges and back you can also use electric clippers.

When using electric clippers on curly hair be sure to give yourself about two inches between the longer curls and the clipper cut. This will give the space needed to blend the clipper cut with the curls. You can use either the scissors to blend the curls with the clipper cut or use the clipper over an angled comb to blend the clipper cut hair with the curls.

The secret to cutting curly hair is to cut the hair within the curl formation and comb and mess the hair to see if the curls are blending properly. Cutting curly hair takes experience. The more curly men’s hair cuts you do the better you will get. Enjoy the fun of the challenge.

Hey men! Tired with your own, limp and lifeless hair? Want a fun hairstyle that gets you noticed and admired by the ladies? Learn how to texturize your hair with these easy steps.

Nick Carter hairstyleNick Carter textured hairstyle

Texturing is the layering of hair to provide a multidimensional look and feel. Flat hair is not cool. Think of messy/casual hair, but with enough control and hold that it isn’t flopping in your eyes and making you look like a shaggy sheep dog. Hair with texture means there’s some "grip" to it; it’s the perfect kind of hairstyle that gets the attention of women. Don’t you want to give women the excuse to play with your hair?

The permanent way to add texture to hair is with a perm. Or if that is too extreme for you, you can employ these semi-permanent tricks to give your hair some lift. You don’t need to be a stylist to give your hair texture.

Here’s how to texturize hair- the easy way. For quick way to create lots of texture, look for men’s styling products with the appealing names such as ”hair wax”, “texture putty” and “molding putty.” Don’t worry, these highly available in grocery stores and drug stores. These products have the consistency of goo and should be used sparingly to avoid giving yourself the dreaded helmet-hair look. Take a small dab on fingers, then run it through small chunks of hair, or use it to muss up hair. Use small amounts to add some interesting anti-gravity, hair lifting looks. Lucky for you, this putty rinses out with your next shower, so you can quickly get rid of undesired results and start all over again.

If you have a wife, girlfriend or willing female friend who is handy with a razor, enlist her help in cutting your hair. Here’s how to texturize your hair with just a razor: have your accomplice twist sections of your hair (gently!) and come in with the razor to lift up. She can choose large chunks of hair or smaller chunks, wherever she likes all over your hair. The idea of twisting and cutting is to introduce variation in your hair, and with that will come texture. Be careful, though, this technique works better with dense, thick, curly hair.

You might choose to go to professional salon to achieve the right textured hairstyle. One of the latest trends is to wear hair longer, with bangs, in longer layers that have lots of texture, especially at the perimeter of the hairline. The idea is to give it the “I just woke up but my hair looks cool” messy appearance. Your stylist may be the best expert in giving you advice on how to texturize your hair, especially if you’re not used to so much self-pampering.

For men who are worried about thinning hair, learning how to texurize hair can be a way to hide the thinning a bit. Special hair texturizers coat the cuticle and add some thickness to hair. Your hair is no longer fine but has some body.

For African-American males, hair texturizing can help soften tightly curled hair. It is a process that helps loosen the curl and make it hang lower.

Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News

12-23-09

Dec. 23--New Year's resolutions for many Americans will mean the latest diets and gym memberships.

But losing weight and keeping it off might be as much about the psychological struggles as the physical changes.

"Some people say losing weight is in the mind," said Judith Horvath, director of the psychotherapy training program at Texas Tech's Health Sciences Center.

The HSC psychiatrist said giving yourself a mental workout can complement healthful eating and exercise regimens.

"I think they need to go hand-in-hand," she said.

Psychological feelings make the holiday season one of the worst times of the year to embark on a program, Horvath said.

"Food can be used as emotional nourishment and to calm anxieties," she said. "The holidays stir up unfulfilled longings in people. People are reminded of the things they are missing out on."

But other emotions make losing weight hard year-round, Horvath said. Feelings of depression, a loss of control, rationalizing weight gain and low self-esteem can make losing weight seem like an impossible task, local experts said.

"Some people don't think they can allow themselves to look their best because they feel like they don't deserve to be a more attractive person," Horvath said.

Most of the morbidly obese patients treated at Lubbock's Advanced Bariatric Surgery Center are depressed, said David Syn, a bariatric surgeon who opened the practice in 2002. Many of them give up the antidepressants when they shed their extra pounds, he said.

They might also feel like they're losing a friend, like they must reach their ideal weight to succeed, or like they've already failed.

"If you look at the laundry list of diets they've tried on their own and failed, that can't have a positive impact on someone's psyche," Syn said.

Syn helps his patients overcome their overeating through surgery, counseling and education, he said.

"One of the great misunderstandings about what I do is that it's just surgery," said Syn, who spends hours with his patients before surgery and follows most for many years after.

"We are empowering people to take back their lives," he said.

Horvath said people striving for less dramatic weight loss can benefit from including family and friends in the process or talking to a professional.

The Texas Tech HSC Psychiatry Clinic provides a free counseling program for patients planning to lose weight, she said.

People should try to find distractions that help them stay away from food, Horvath said.

"They have to find out how to deal with the loss of satisfaction eating provides them," she said. "It's about exchanging the reward of food for the reward of achieving their goals."
